Mima Mounds Nature Preserve
Faith Walkers and Friends,
An extremely wet spring, Sleep’s trip to Gatlinburg and the Great Smokey Natl. Park and a short bout with COVID brings us to let’s get out on a Faith Walk!
First a few housekeeping items:
We need to update the Faith Walker email list so if you would like to be removed or know someone to be added email Bill at sleepbd@msn.com
Because of COVID concerns more people elect to drive to the trailhead so be sure to have a valid Discover Pass and a NW Forest Pass or Golden Age Pass. Questions contact Bill
If you plan to Walk/ Hike it is not required but helpful to let the hike leader know you plan to join the group and where you will meet up. All are welcome! Just show up ready to go.
We try to leave the church at 9:00 a.m. sharp so be there early. Call or text if you will be late.
We will plan to have a low impact walk alternative on the Walk/Hikes whenever possible but we will need a leader for both groups.
If you plan on carpooling bring a face mask,
We need people to lead their favorite hike. We can get the emails out, just volunteer.
Thursday June 2nd we will start out with a flat walk of the Mima Mounds Nature Preserve . Upper South Fork of the Skokomish River
Faith Walkers and Friends,
On Thursday Aug 26th we will enjoy a hike up into some old-growth timber on the Upper South Fork of the Skokomish River. The hike is a 2 mile round trip with about 225 ft. of elevation gain. There are some interesting geological features along the trail. Depending on the group we may also walk around Spider Lake which is a 1.8 mile loop with 300 feet of elevation change. Spider Lake was formed by an earthquake triggered landslide about 1,000 years ago.

The roads to access this trail are a mix of paved and gravel road, accessible by low-clearance vehicles.

Waffle Hike (Alderbrook Trails)
The Alderbrook trails offer several options from a 1.0 mile loop or the Licorice Fern loop with a 3.2 mile loop plus a bonus of 2.8 mile more on the Dogwood Ridge for the more hardy. Pick your trail.
Springtime hiking in the NW always has the chance of rain showers and this week is there is a 50% chance so after our waffles we will revaluate our hike options. Most of the trails are tree covered but bring a rain coat if some decide to go for it. We normally eat our lunch on the bulkhead at Alderbrook Resort weather permitting.
Please let me know if you plan to help Celebrate Spring (come to breakfast at Joan’s) so I can let Joan know on a waffle count. Also we will plan to leave the church at 8:30 a.m. or meet at Joan's at 8:30. Also let me know where you will meet the group so we don't miss you.
Happy Spring Trails

Murhut Falls + More
This Thursday Oct 8th we enjoy one our favorite waterfall hikes to Murhut Falls and do an add on to the Ranger Hole or Rocky Brooks Falls'
The Murhut Falls is a 1.6 mile out and back with 250 ft. of elevation change which is in the first 1/2 mile but we just take it easy. The 2 connected water falls make it worth the hike. After Murhut we will either hike down to the Ranger Hole on the Duckabush river which is an easy 1.4 mile out & back hike with one steep section. The other option is a very short 1/4 mile walk to Rocky Brook Falls but extreme care must be used on the rocks at the base made very slippery from the spray from the falls. The road to Murhut includes about 3 miles of gravel road with pot holes.
We will leave the church at 9:00 a.m. and meet others at the intersection of the Duckabush River Rd (Forest Service Rd 2510) and Hwy 101 MP 310.( 22 miles north of Hoodsport) We will make potty stop at the Interrorem Guard Station cabin 4 miles up the river. Another pit toilet location is the Duckabush River trailhead. The weather will be cooling so bring a light jacket. Everyone will need to wear a face covering at the falls because the view point is congested.
Please let me know where you will meet the group. Parking is limited at the Murhut TH so plan to park tightly. No pass is required for parking at Murhut but the Northwest Forest pass is required for Ranger Hole. We will probably eat lunch at the Ranger Hole TH after the Murhut hike.

Light jacket

Upper Big Creek Loop
This is a 4.5 mile loop the confluence for lunch then back on a good trail maintained by the Rose Mountain Trail Crew. This is probably the best maintained trail in the Olympic Natl. Forest. There is a 850 ft. elevation gain which is moderate but we hike the loop counter clockwise which eases the elevation gain. The hike back out is all downhill. After lunch at the new Big Creek Bridge we continue on the Loop or return back the way we came up. Some may wish to add another mile or so to a overlook of Lake Cushman.
We will leave the church at 9:00 a.m. or meet at the Big Creek camp ground at 10:00 a.m.
Let Bill know what your plans are so we don't leave you behind.

We will have our lunch down by the beach. The hike is mostly tree covered but bring sun block and a hat for lunch time.
We will leave the church at 9:00 a.m. or meet at the trailhead parking lot on the South side of Hwy 106 at 9:45 a.m. The Park address is 12190 WA-106, Union, WA 98592.
