Just As I Am

Matthew 26:26-30

I just listened to an old Gospel hymn, words written by Charlotte Elliott and music by William B. Bradbury. You perhaps know it too:
          “Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me,
           and that thou bidd’st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come.”

It brings up memories galore! At Augustana Lutheran Church (Denver), we celebrated Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month. It was a very special Sunday for our family. After the liturgy, I recall filing out of our pew, me tucked safely between my parents, and standing in the center aisle until the ushers instructed us to move to the “table” or communion rail. There we knelt while the congregation sang “Just as I am.” Those words defined to me as a child and later as a teenager, that I was welcome to come to the table of Jesus just as I am! Jesus welcomed me! And here, I was blessed (as a child) or given the wafer and wine (as a teenager) which was Jesus’ sacrifice for me—the greatest gift I could receive! The pastor then dismissed our table with the words, “The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you and give you peace. Amen.”   It was a big moment, and it left me awed!

Later, when I was ordained, I recall that same awe came over me when I was able to bless the elements and then give them to my congregational friends and family! What a holy moment! Just as I am—called to God’s table of acceptance, given life-transforming elements, and participating with others—my church family!

What does Holy Communion mean to you? Is it a holy time in God’s presence when the memory of God’s transforming love for you is experienced at the altar? Is it a time for you to celebrate the wonder of God’s calling you “just as you are?”  Verse 3 of the song, says “Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve.” Those are God’s gifts to you and me! What a mind-blowing gift that is!

PRAYER: Lord, just as I am, I come to you. Thank you for receiving me, loving me, and allowing me to participate in your table fellowship!  Amen.
